RCMP find it hard to believe that 14,000 people will celebrate the end of the Mayan calendar by attending an outdoor party in Barnhartvale.
Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said he'd be surprised if anyone attends the event, which has been promoted on Facebook for two years, given the time of year and weather conditions.
"We don't believe the information that is circulating through such an unreliable medium will mean 14,000 people are going to show up there," he said.
"You'd be lucky to get the graduating Class of 2013 there."
The bash takes place in the Tree Flats area of Barnhartvale on Campbell Range Road, a known party spot for teens, said Learned. The Facebook page indicated the party will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday night and continue until midnight.
In the interest of public safety, officers will be made aware of the potential gathering. Learned said police typically patrol the area and check cars that are coming and going. Any liquor will be seized.
The Facebook page promoting the End of the World party indicates people all the way from Winnipeg want to attend.
As of Friday afternoon, the page shows 14,244 going, 3,833 maybe, and 5,636 invited.
