Charges of animal cruelty have been laid against a Kamloops man accused of strangling his cat with his bare hands and leaving the animal's dead body in a Dumpster behind his home.
Crown counsel approved charges against Steven Seidel, said a B.C. SCPA release Friday. Seidel is charged in connection with the asphyxiation death of his pet, a black and white cat named Oreo.
The charges come in the wake of two other animal cruelty cases concluding in Vancouver. Brian Whitlock and Jordan Lucas were both recently sentenced to jail after pleading guilty. Whitlock pleaded guilty to killing his dog Captain, and leaving the body in a Kitsilano Dumpster. Lucas pleaded guilty to torturing several cats and a mouse on video.
The B.C. SPCA was disappointed by the sentences, particularly because Lucas received only a two-year ban on owning animals, said Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the B.C. SPCA.
Following the SPCA's investigation into the death of Oreo, they recommended the crown press charges against Seidel. They were glad to learn Friday that he would be charged, said Moriarty, and hoped the case would be taken seriously.
"It's sad that a person could have such anger to inflict death upon an animal. It's truly tragic," said Moriarty.
