Supporting youth exchange programs has earned the Kamloops Rotary clubs the 2012 Kamloops YMCA-YWCA Y Peace Medal.

The Y Peace Medal is awarded every year to individuals or groups who, without any special resources, demonstrate a commitment to peace through contributions to the community or overseas, Darcy Harris, funds development and communications director for the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA, said in a press release.

For 30 years Rotary clubs in Kamloops have supported the youth exchange program as a means of promoting international understanding and peace, said Harris.

Between eight and 10 young people travel abroad or are hosted by members of the Kamloops Rotary clubs each year, gaining experience in new cultures and friends.

All five of the city's Rotary clubs will be presented with the award during a ceremony next week.
