Kevin Costner fans need to mark July 7 on the calendar as the Academy Award winning actor and director brings his country rock band Modern West to Sun Peaks Resort.

"This is the biggest summer concert we've ever had," Christopher Nicolson, president of Tourism Sun Peaks, said Wednesday.

Sun Peaks scheduled Costner and Modern West for the free outdoor show with the help of talent buyer Bill Jaswal of Jelly Promotions.

An exact time has yet to be confirmed, but Nicolson expects the concert will start between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The stage will be set up in the village facing the mountain, where outdoor seating will be set up on the slopes, he said.

"From a resort perspective, we're certainly expecting thousands of people for this type of concert," said Nicolson.

Known for his starring roles in hit films like Dances With Wolves, The Untouchables and JFK, Costner has maintained a music career for decades.

Costner befriended band mate John Coiman during an acting workshop in Los Angeles more than 20 years ago. The two became friends and played and wrote music together, forming the rock band Roving Boy, which had a No. 1 hit single in Japan called Simple Truth.

Modern West was formed when Costner's wife, Christine, encouraged him to reconnect with his musical roots. Their first album, Untold Truths, debuted on Nov. 11, 2008.

The concert kicks off what Nicolson expects will be a busy summer for the resort, with multiple events planned from July until October. These include Jo Berry's Road Race on June 30 and Oktoberfest on Sept. 29.

"This will be the biggest summer for Sun Peaks in terms of the number of concerts, visitors and festivals," he said.
