Laid-off workers will get EI maximum

In reply to Domtar To Close Line, Lay Off 125 Workers (The Daily News, Dec. 14), this is the flipside to that downside news for a little upside, I believe.

The 125 persons that are to be laid off are well qualified to receive the top Employment Insurance benefits paid to anyone on EI.

That's not a bad Plan B. Sure it's not the big and steady wages that have become the usual but this top paid premium is the envy of many living on less.

Also anyone on EI can look at retraining, if necessary, while receiving those benefits.

I would think that being displaced workers, these 125 workers will also be qualified candidates to have retraining options made available.

In Canada, we are graced with having a Plan B when a large plant lays off its employees, and it certainly does allow for a little wiggle room and extra time to exercise those options.
