MP's survey shows support for pipelines

'These were general questions about pipelines'

A pipeline survey conducted by Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod reveals 62 per cent of responders support the concept of an oil pipeline.

The survey results - based on about a thousand responses - reveal 48 per cent support a pipeline but have concerns about environmental safety and 27 per cent oppose the idea altogether, McLeod said Wednesday.

She said the survey didn't address the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline or the twinning of the Kinder Morgan line that runs through Kamloops.

"These were general questions about pipelines," McLeod said in a phone interview from Ottawa.

Pipeline opponents are skeptical about McLeod's results. Anita Strong, head of the Kamloops chapter of the Council of Canadians, questioned McLeod's findings and methodology.

Based on reports in the media and what she's hearing in environmental circles, most people aren't in favour of a pipeline - any pipeline, said Strong.

"You never know about any survey that she sends out like that. It's obviously not a scientific survey," she said. "Maybe (the people who responded) are supporters of hers."

McLeod acknowledged there wasn't anything scientific about her survey. She said they were mailed to constituents' homes along with information on safety measures and other pipeline facts.

She said a pipeline keeps more big rigs off Canadian roads and highways. And Canadian crude is worth $20 less a barrel than other markets because Canada caters to a North American market more than overseas.

"When people hear that 90 per cent of the gas in the Lower Mainland comes from the Kinder Morgan pipeline, I think that's important information for people to have," she said.

Strong still doesn't put a lot of stock in the findings. She said the sampling is too small to be reflective of the population as a whole.

She said she doesn't remember seeing the survey appear in her mailbox.
