A suspected thief brandishing bear spray fled from Future Shop Wednesday afternoon, but police caught up with him about 45 minutes later on Fortune Drive.

Police officers arrived at Future Shop at about 5:10 p.m. after receiving a report of a man breaking into a van at the rear of the store, Cpl. Wayne Chung said.

He was confronted by two witnesses, but pulled out a canister of bear spray and fled.

At about 5:55 p.m., police received another report of an erratic driver on Summit Drive travelling toward the North Shore. A vehicle was pulled over at Fortune Drive and Eighth Street, but the driver fled.

Several police cars converged on the scene and cornered the man. He pulled out the bear spray again, but was soon arrested.

"Investigation has confirmed that this suspect is responsible for both events," Chung said.

"Numerous charges are pending against a local male known to police."
