The Creston Valley Advance started life as the Creston Valley Advert, a mimeographed ad sheet, just in time for Christmas, on December 19, 1948. Founder and publisher Alex Carruthers and his wife Doreen had recently moved to Creston from Vancouver Island and Alex wanted to start a newspaper to begin a new career after being discharged from the Canadian Army.
The Advance soon became a full-fledged newspaper and began to publish twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays, a schedule that continued for more than 50 years, when it reverted to once again become a weekly publication. Under Carruthers’ ownership, the Creston Valley Advance became the community’s newspaper of record, superseding the long-established Creston Review, which ceased to publish in the 1980s.
Our newspaper serves as the prime local news source for communities from the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, south to the Idaho border and east to Yahk. Two news reporters and photographers work with numerous correspondents and columnists to ensure the Advance is the go-to source for community information.
The Creston Valley Advance is located downtown on Canyon Street in a historical building that dates back to 1911. With more than 3,000 paid subscribers, we continue to have a market penetration that is the envy of most other BC newspapers.
