A Brief History

Incorporated in 1897, Nelson has a trading area of over 50,000 people. Nelson is located in the Southern Interior of British Columbia in a region called the West Kootenay. We are half way between Calgary and Vancouver.

Nelson is situated on the junction of provincial Highway 3A and Highway 6, and sits on the shores of Kootenay Lake, one of the largest lakes in British Columbia. Tourism is quickly becoming a major employer for the area. Our breathtaking scenery and natural beauty of the area are right at the City's doorstep. Nelson is also part of the world renowned Selkirk Loop. According to the yearly Best Small Arts Towns in America, the City of Nelson, still reigns as Canada's "Best Small Arts Town". Nelson has the largest number of heritage buildings in the interior of British Columbia. The Nelson Daily News has been publishing since 1902 in Nelson and the surrounding communities.
