Sewage in ocean OK

I feel I must comment on your columnist Robert Koopmans' poorly informed comments on Victoria's sewage treatment (Really Is No Place Like Home, The Daily News, Dec. 8).

Admittedly, discharging primary treated effluent into the strait does not sound good.

However the tidal currents are such that the effect on the environment is minimal.

This has been confirmed by scientific studies. It is felt that construction and operation of the proposed treatment facilitiesincluding disposal of the remaining sludge is likely to be more detrimental to the environment than the existing system.

The estimated construction cost for the proposed system is $750 million. The federal, provincial and regional governments will each pay $250 million.

To spend $750 million on unnecessary work in a period of deficit budgets when there are necessary expenditures for such things as health care and education is clearly insane.
