Sports Briefs: Frasca comes through as Saints drop Jewels

Rebecca Frasca had 17 points, including four on free throws in the final 90 seconds, as the NorKam Saints won their first game of the Okanagan AAA senior girls basketball season, 46-40 over the Salmon Arm Jewels.

Katy Thorne also had 11 points for the Saints, who led 26-24 at the half. Zahyna Lewis had 12 points for Salmon Arm.

The Saints are scheduled to play the Rutland Voodoos in Kelowna tonight.

Mario Bruno had three goals to lead the Dan's Collision Roos to a 6-4 victory over the Gringos in midget recreational hockey action Wednesday.

Matt Norman also scored in the victory, as did Mitch Bymoen and Aaron Larnder. Brett Campbell and Joel Knutilla each had two assists in support of Roos goaltender Mac Whitmore.

Blake Rose and Kolby Pauwels split the goaltending for the Gringos, who got two goals and two assists from Chad Ketsa. Eric Simmons and Brett Nagy also scored in the loss.

The Brocklehurst Broncs defeated the St. Ann's Crusaders 42-14 in a Grade 8 boys basketball game Wednesday.

Mitchell Mathieson had 11 points to lead the Broncs, and Devon Halcrow scored 10.

It's a playoff weekend for junior basketball in the region, with four separate playoff tournaments on the schedule.

The Tier 1 boys city championship will be held at Valleyview Secondary today and Saturday, while the Tier 2 championship will run today and Saturday in Chase

The Tier 1 girls playdown runs today and Saturday at South Kamloops' J.P. gym., with the Tier 2 event today at South Kam's Kam High gym.

Centre Kelly Olynyk of Gonzaga University in Spokane has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month for January.

It's the second straight monthly honour for Olynyk, who is from Kamloops.

He averaged 21.1 points per game in January, connecting on 64.5 percent of his field-goal attempts (60-for-93). He pulled down 7.5 rebounds per game, and shot 45-for-58 from the free-throw line (77.8 per cent) as the Bulldogs went 8-1 for the month.

Olynyk scored a career-high 33 points in a victory at Santa Clara University, and followed that with a 31-point effort in a victory over Saint Mary's College.

Also in January, Olynyk was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch list and was selected to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 8 team with a 3.53 grade-point average. He graduated in December and is currently enrolled in the MBA program.
