"To be an editor was to be a geyser of opinion; every day, without fail, Old Faithful must shoot up his jet of comment, neither so provocative as to drive subscribers from his paper, nor yet so inane as to be utterly contemptible."
- Leaven of Malice by Robertson Davies
Davies knew what he was talking about, having written hundreds of editorials as editor of the Peterborough Examiner before becoming one of Canada's foremost authors.
What he never had to write was the final editorial in a newspaper's history.
This newspaper has published more than 10,000 editorials in more than 80 years - some contentious, some frivolous, some dashed off in a last-minute panic. They have taken contradictory positions to each other, been inconsistent, irreverent, and sometimes just plain wrong.
But they've always been here.
We're still dealing with the shock and sadness of our closure, as is the community. The full
impact won't really be known until later, as our voice falls silent both in print and online.
We remain hopeful that the community will strive to stay informed about the issues that affect their world, and that other media outlets can fill the void we leave behind.
And we remain proud of the job we have done. At the risk of being immodest, we have accomplished some great things in the past 80 years and have made our community a better place to live in countless ways.
We have supported hundreds of community groups and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities, literacy initiatives and promoted community health through The Daily News Boogie, Raise a Reader and Christmas Cheer campaigns.
Most importantly, we have made our community more informed and enlightened through award-winning news coverage for decades, and we have served as a forum for debate and discussion, both in print and online, on the issues that are important to you.
In short, we have made a difference. And we could not have done it without you. Your faithful support as readers, subscribers and advertisers over the years has made it all possible.
On behalf of all of us at the Kamloops Daily News who have served the community, past and present, thank you. Be well. Be well informed.
