Firefighters and paramedics remove the female driver in this van for transport to RIH .

A 54-year-old woman is in hospital with several broken bones and chest injuries after the van she was in was hit by a train Tuesday at about 6 p.m., Kamloops RCMP said Wednesday.

The van was sitting on the tracks at a private crossing when it was struck by a southbound CN train. The crossing is at the south end of Rayleigh near a dog kennel.

The front end of the vehicle was pushed into the driver, and an extricating machine had to be used to get her out.

Police are investigating why the van was stopped on the tracks and why it failed to move when the train approached.

The crew of the locomotive was shaken by the incident, but not injured.

RCMP are asking witnesses to come forward.
