Kamloops will become the most virtually displayed and toured city on the planet if a new technology firm has its way.
The company, Greater Than Technology Corp., will launch an interactive 360-degree virtual tour platform, president Peter Cameron-Inglis announced Friday.
The software will be showcased on www.ShareMy360.com and will start by featuring Kamloops amenities and businesses.
"What makes this software unique is that it's more than photography," Cameron-Inglis said in a press release.
"Video, audio and any kind of document can be put into these tours, and we combine it all in a web portal with social media, so that people can share these great experiences with others. It's like YouTube but for virtual tours."
He said Mastermind Studios, the software firm's sister company, is approaching local businesses.
"The biggest challenge right now is cooperation from the weather," he said. "We just haven't been getting enough sun for photography."
Cameron-Inglis said the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, Venture Kamloops and the North Shore Business Improvement Association have agreed to include virtual tours from the site on their own websites.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District received a Northern Development Initiatives grant to produce a series of virtual tours marketing film locations and services as well as tourism attractions in the region.
Cameron-Inglis plans to launch the site in more than 400 cities throughout Canada and the U.S.
