The Interior's newest winery is hosting a grand opening and tasting today in Lillooet.
Heleen Pannekoek and Rolf de Bruin, a Dutch couple, recently emigrated to Canada to start a vineyard and winery in Lillooet at the site of a former Hudson's Bay company fort that was never completed.
The couple planted 36,000 plants on eight hectares on a bench beside the Fraser River this spring. It is expected to be ready for production in three years.
To fill the gap in the meantime, Fort Behrens is sourcing wine and grapes from the Okanagan. The rustic winery is located in a barn on the property.
The tasting event begins at 10 a.m. today. The vineyard is located at the junction of Highway 97N the Gold Nugget Arterial in Lillooet.
