Controversial pro-life banner returns on Tranquille

Last time there were objections from B.C. Humanist Association and Kamloops Centre for Rational Thought

The pro-life banner is back.

The blue and white banner proclaiming Protect Human Life Week is hanging over Tranquille Road and will move to Victoria Street in the regular weekly banner rotation.

City administrator David Trawin said Tuesday the banner meets the City's criteria. It doesn't use any offensive words or message, although the broader topic of abortion is, of course, sensitive for some people.

It's the same banner as last year and the City's policy is the same as last year, he said.

Trawin was unaware of any complaints so far, although the banner, owned by the Kamloops Pro-Life Society, had just gone up.

Although the banner has been strung across the downtown and North Shore market main streets for the past five years, the City didn't get any complaints until last year, when the B.C. Humanist Association and Kamloops Centre for Rational Thought objected.

Mayor Peter Milobar said council doesn't decide which banners are put up. Staff vet them based on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms principles. So while some people who are religious might be involved, the banner itself does not have a religious message.

The blue banner with white lettering states: "One Life Can Make a Difference. Protect Human Life Week" and features a pro-life logo on the right side.
