Graphic artist shares in medal glory with his designs

He's been toiling away at his graphic design job this week, far from the splendor of the medal podium of the Western Canada Summer Games.

But every time an athlete wins gold, silver or bronze, Justin Wilkinson smiles with pride.

The Kamloops graphic artist designed the medals that are going home with the winning athletes.

"It was exciting," said the TRU graduate of the opportunity to design a lasting memento for the athletes.

But it was a little nerve-wracking too, he admits.

"I found out about it right around the time of the Olympics," said Wilkinson. "Those medals came out and they had that native design and they were really elaborate and I was thinking 'Wow, I have to come up with something that good.'"

Wilkinson's design features the Games logo as the centerpiece, with the silhouettes of Mount Peter and Mount Paul at the top of the medal where the ribbon attaches.

"That just gave it a little something extra, as opposed to just being the regular clasp," said Wilkinson, who is pleased with how the design turned out.

Wilkinson works at Canada Logos on Mt. Paul Way, the company that won the bid to design the medals and the official apparel of the Games. He's been busy at work since the tournament began but says he plans to attend at least one medal ceremony to see his design in the spotlight.
