A true wine enthusiast can't honestly claim aficionado status until he knows the difference between warm and cool climate wines.
Thankfully, Kamloops has Harper's Trail Estate Winery to provide a proper education.
The winery is launching a regular "wine chat" on Dec. 4 with resident sommelier Kevin Enns.
The first topic? Demystifying cool climate wines.
"While enjoying Harper's Trail wines, we'll discuss the specifics of growing and producing wines in a northern climate," said Bobbe Lyall, winery operations manager.
Grapes grown in cooler regions ripen and accumulate flavour slowly.
The wines tend to be complex and balanced with higher acidity and more mineral flavours, making them the most food-friendly wines in the world.
Kamloops wine buffs can experience the effects first hand as the wine chat promises to stimulate the mind and the palate.
"Unique food and wine combinations will challenge our guests to think (and drink) outside the normal wine-pairing box," said Lyall.
The event is $30 per person and happens at 6 p.m. in the winery tasting room at 2720 Shuswap Road.
