SH: A Lower Mainland man has been charged with weapons and drug offences following a police raid on a Westsyde home.

Christopher Rich Ong, 28, was charged Tuesday with two counts each for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized and possession of a controlled substance.

Ong was arrested Monday night when RCMP executed a search warrant at a basement suite on the 2900 block Bank Road.

RCMP Const. Pat Nagy said investigators found a small amount of methamphetamine and heroine. Officers also retrieved a pair of unloaded shotguns. Both weapons had the barrels and stocks sawed off.

A new law banning motorists from using cellphones without a hands-free device isn't going to be easy to enforce, RCMP said Tuesday.

Const. Pat Nagy said catching drivers who talk or text will be a challenge, which is why there is a one-month grace period to promote education about the legislation.

An enforcement blitz began Jan. 1. As of next month the law will be enforced with a $167 fine.

She said the ban does not apply to police, firefighters and paramedics.

The coroner's service has identified a Boston Bar man killed in a weekend accident near Savona.

Lorne Richard Nuttall, 39, died Saturday when his Ford truck left the Trans-Canada Highway on Saturday.

Witnesses told police the truck passed them at about 9:20 a.m. A short distance later the vehicle's toolbox was spotted on the side of the road. Motorists stopped at Six Mile Hill and found the truck at the bottom of a 12-metre embankment.
