Milobar joins other mayors in raising concerns about transit costs

Mayor Peter Milobar is in Victoria Wednesday, meeting with about a dozen of his colleagues and Blair Lekstrom, the B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, to talk money.

More specifically, the meeting is about hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional costs assessed to municipalities for transit fleet expenses.

Milobar said Tuesday the province is looking at a new way of amortizing the bus fleet costs that could see a city like Kamloops hit with a transit bill that's $600,000 to $900,000 bigger.

"There's some very real costs hitting us with transit," he said.

The goal of the meeting is to send a message and have a discussion on transit outside of the Lower Mainland, he said.

Milobar said the formula involved is complicated and more municipalities are just getting hit with the change now.

"Certainly I'd rather be at the table with the conversation than sitting at home," he said.
